NongHyup is occupying approximately 50% of the distribution of agricultural products in Korea, and operates 13 general distribution centers and 2,100 Nonghyup chain stores. The large-marts dealing with agricultural products apply a modern logistics system for the industrial products to agriculture sectors to improve distribution structure for agricultural products. On the other hand, NongHyup is highly depending upon a traditional wholesale market and join market in distribution channel. However, NongHyup's conventional distribution organizations make impossible the introduction of modern logistics systems. The main goal of this study is to lay out an efficient logistics system for NongHyup which is expected to bring about a new type of agri-food logistics distribution in Korea.
NongHyup is planning to construct an agri-food hub logistics center in 2010 and complete it by 2012 in AnSung city area. It is expected that AnSung hub logistics center raises the efficiency in agri-food logistics by reducing the distribution cost, managing a supply-chain properly, introducing a modern distribution system, and integrating packaging features with logistics functions.
It is anticipated that the total costs for AnSung logistics center including purchasing the land, machinery, and so on will be 121,521 million won. The total volume of agricultural products that AnSung's logistics center deals with will amount to 137million tons in 2020.
Cost/benefit analysis was implemented to judge economic feasibility of the construction of AnSung logistics center. Results showed that benefit/cost ratio ranged 4.25 to 6.86, indicating that the construction of AnSung logistics center is an economically feasible. In addition, it is prospected that the AnSung logistics center will create new 630 jobs after 2020 when the logistics center gets stabilized.
