미세 먼지 농도가 돼지고기 구매에 미치는 영향

Abstract

이 연구는 경제학 및 심리학 관점에서 미세먼지 농도가 돼지고기 삼겹살 구입에 미치는 영향을 규명하였다. 분석에는 농촌진흥청의 농식품 소비자 패널조사와 한국환경공단의 미세먼지 농도 측정치를 활용하였다. 1주 동안 삼겹살 구입액이 없는 가구와, 실제로는 관측되지 않지만 삼겹살 구입액의 차이를 초래하는 가구의 이질적인 특성을 감안하여 Mundlak이 제안한 패널 토빗모형을 분석에 사용하였다. 소비자가 속한 가구의 인구사회학적 특성, 식생활패턴, 계절적 요인 등의 영향을 통제할 때, 1주 동안의 미세먼지 농도가 평균 10㎍/㎥ 증가할 경우 그 다음 주의 삼겹살 평균 구입액은 23.9원 늘어나는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 소비자가 효용극대화에 입각한 합리적인 선택을 한다면 미세먼지 농도 증가에 따라 삼겹살 구입을 늘릴 필요가 없으나, 미세먼지 농도 증가로 인한 소비자의 심리적 감정 변화와 방어적 자세가 삼겹살 구입을 증가시키는 기저로 작용했다고 해석할 수 있다.

Drawing upon the evidence produced in economics and psychology, we show that air-quality-induced mood changes affect the decisions of consumers expenditure on pork meats. We collect the particulate matter (PM) concentrations records at three regions-Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi, and after deseasonalizing its daily records, combine them with the weekly household food expenditure data set obtained from the household panel survey conducted from January 2010 to December 2014 by Korea's Rural Development Administration. We utilize a random effect tobit panel model augmented by Mundlak’s device. After controlling for socio-economic and other seasonal factors affecting pork meats expenditure, we find the ambient air pollution is strongly significantly correlated with the pork meats expenditure. A week with a PM10 that is 10 higher than the average in that month of the five years would be predicted to see 23.9 won increased in the next week per household expenditure on pork meats. As potential explanations of this finding, we propose a mood congruency effect, saliency effect, and availability heuristic prevail in consumers' food purchasing behavior.
