The study is to review North Korea's agricultural situation, and to analyzethe demand and supply of food in 2001/02 marketing year. Total food requirementis estimated at 6.09 million tons and total food production at 3.49 million tonsin 2001. The food shortage is estimated to be 2.59 million tons in 2001/02year.North Korea has attempted to boost its agricultural production byreorganizing agricultural systems. It is thus necessary to raise food productionthrough all the possible means such as breeding new varieties, developingagricultural production base, fostering agricultural input industries. However,a need for food aid from foreign society would be helpful to meet the foodshortage. The tasks call for international community aid and cooperation betweenSouth and North Korea.
